CMU Engineering Team Joins iPBL 2024 Wind Turbine Design and Construction Competition in Taipei
The Faculty of Engineering at Chiang Mai University, led by Assistant Professor Dr. Nat Worayos from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, along with three selected undergraduate students, participated in the iPBL (International Project-Based Learning) wind turbine design and construction competition in Taipei, Taiwan, from August 19-25, 2024. The host of this event was the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.
The selected students are:
- Mr. Tonkla Hangsoongnern, student ID 640610445, Department of Mechanical Engineering
- Mr. Wongsakorn Wongchompu, student ID 640610542, Department of Mechanical Engineering
- Mr. Supakit Yaowyuan, student ID 640610558, Department of Mechanical Engineering
The competition focused on designing and constructing a horizontal-axis wind turbine with a wind lens to maximize efficiency and minimize vibration. Competitors applied multidisciplinary engineering knowledge, such as fluid dynamics, structural design, and vibration analysis. In addition to technical challenges, students honed teamwork, presentation, and decision-making skills under time constraints, working alongside peers from three leading institutions: Osaka Institute of Technology (Japan), National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taipei, Taiwan), and Can Tho University (Vietnam).
The competition results showed that the student representatives from the Faculty of Engineering received awards in the competition as follows:
2nd Prize: Mr. Wongsakorn Wongchompu
3rd Prize: Mr. Supakit Yaowyuan
Honorable Mention: Mr. Tonkla Hangsoongnern
The iPBL competition was first initiated in 2014 through collaboration between Osaka Institute of Technology and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, with the aim of promoting experiential learning and cultural exchange. The competition is held annually, and in 2025, Osaka Institute of Technology will host the next event.
Participation in this competition offers an excellent opportunity to enhance engineering skills, broaden horizons, and build networks with students from various countries, which will significantly benefit both the students’ futures and the engineering field in Thailand.
