Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University was established on April 24th, 1970 and was declared by Office of the Prime Minister on June 3rd, 1970 to be one of the governmental units in Chiang Mai University. On September 30th, 1971, Office of the Education Council approved Engineering course (Civil Engineering) to be the first course and after that Office of the Civil Service Commission accredited Bachelor of Engineering, Chiang Mai University, so graduated student from the faculty can serve in the governmental service.
Department of Civil Engineering was the first department of Faculty of Engineering to be approved to open a Bachelor degree course in 1970 and in the year of 1987 it has opened a department of Civil Engineering in a Master degree course. The objectives aim to produce graduate students in the department of Civil Engineering to be an Engineer who have gained knowledge and skills in order to both apply and work in their career and also be able to solve problems by using skills they have learned. Electrical Engineering Department (founded in 1975) aims to produce qualified graduate students in the department of Electrical Engineering to be able to serve and guide societies in the right direction and fulfills the requirement of the country and also produces valuable research works. Apart from studying in classes, The Department of Electrical Engineering intends to produce valuable researches which will be worth for the country’s academic and technology development.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (founded in 1977) courses have been applied by using Constructionism as a method for build up a learning organization which consists of students as a learning center. This method mainly focuses on problem-oriented activities which requires activities as a tool to present problems and this could lead students to understand the designed processing of Mechanical Engineering and students will be able to point out the principal matter of the problem, do some researches related to the problem, present their idea to solve the problem, synthesize their thought until get the appropriate one, analyze the design obtained from their thought before making a decision to utilize the product.
